Cedar Grove Cheese Factory Field Trip

On April 22, I had the pleasure of accompanying Nate's class on a field trip to the Cedar Grove Cheese Factory in Plain, WI.  We had a really fun time, but probably not for the reason you're thinking.  To save money, the school sent three classes on one school bus.  That didn't leave much room for chaperones!  So the teachers suffered through the bus ride, while the parents carpooled!  It was, by far, the most fun I've had on a field trip. :)  I rode up with six moms, chatting and laughing for the full hour trip there and back.  And yes, the cheese factory was fun too.

In addition to seeing the cheese factory, we were able to see the Living Machine.  This is a method of waste treatment that Cedar Grove uses to turn all of their waste into pure water or protein fertilizer.  They use greenhouse plants and bacteria--It was pretty amazing.

The water at the end was clean enough for this fish!

And of course, the boys played tagged while waiting for the bus.

  1. Isn't wastewater treatment one of the coolest things ever? I love it! (And not just because I'm a microbiologist who worked for an environmental engineer...)
