(^^^^^^Listen to the hymn ^^^^^^)
From the first time that I heard this song, I loved it. The melody
is almost haunting. After falling in love with the music, I learned the lyrics to the song. Anybody who knows me knows that I NEVER listen to lyrics--like when I told Ra that a song would be great for her wedding, but it was actually about death. Hee hee. Well, find these lyrics and learn them, I did. Is it possible that they are actually
better than the music itself? Or maybe they just go together so well that they
nearly reach perfection. Here are the lyrics:
1. Come, thou Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it,
mount of thy redeeming love.
2. Here I raise mine Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I'm come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.
3. O to grace how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here's my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.
I don't even know where to start. I love the part of the 2nd verse when "Jesus
sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from
danger, interposed his precious blood." Those words blow me away. I feel connected
to this, somehow, because Jesus sought me when I was a stranger to Him. He must love us so much to seek each and every one of us out, to rescue us from danger, by
his great and horrible suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, and his death on the
cross. I am humbled that Jesus did all of that for me--little, old me.
I also love the last verse. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God
I love. This is me--My faith is not unwavering. It is not firm like stone. I know
that I am prone to wander; it's just what I do. How sad, though, when I think of it
as leaving the God I love. I know that God loves me, but that doesn't make it any
easier when my best friend dies, during my trials of miscarriages, or through my
lifetime struggle with depression. But what I do know, is that I can pray to be
comforted. I can pray to know how to survive. I also know that Jesus suffered each
and every one of our sins, pains, heartaches so that he could know what we're going
through and help us make it.
Here's my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for thy courts above.
If you haven't heard this hymn, please listen. If you're not into the whole religion thing, just listen to the music--after all, the music is what drew me to it in the first place.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. I especially love the third verse as well for all the reasons you mentioned. Thank you for this reminder - I really needed it.
