This morning Abbie had her first surgery. We arrived at the American Family Children's Hospital at 7AM. We chatted with a few doctors, took vital signs and got Abbie weighed. Then she watched the first half of the Hannah Montana movie until her surgery started. At about 8:40, I put on my gown and hat to go back to the OR with Abbie. I helped her get situated and stayed with while they used gas to help her fall asleep. I layed her down and she let out a big snore. Everybody laughed and I felt good knowing that she was definitely sound asleep.
Dr. Tom Pasic removed her tonsils and adenoids. The surgery lasted about an hour and went very well. Dr. Pasic told us that her tonsils were huge and obstructive. Alan and I were both allowed back in the PACU to wait for her to wake up. We were all prepared for her to wake up as a crazy beast, but she was an angel. All the nurses said she was their star patient. She was fairly well oriented even during her first wake-up. She drank some water, got some Morphine and then fell back to sleep for another hour. Abbie was snuggled into my arms, so we both got wheeled on her bed back to the recovery room. When she woke up, she ate two popsicles and a slushee. She was hilarious on her Morphine too. At one point, her popsicle dropped and she said, "This is crazy!" You can listen to her funny voice in the video--She's loopy and swollen, so she sounds even funnier. She was so cute. We stayed for about 4 hours after the surgery and then came home. Now she's eaten 2 bowls of vanilla ice cream, another popsicle and a pudding cup. And everybody said she wouldn't want to eat... They definitely don't know Abbie!
We're so grateful for the way that things went today (and for the Tylenol with Codeine we have at home!). Please keep Abbie in your prayers, as it is supposed to be about a week before she's feeling much better.

I guess when you have a nurse as a mom and a doctor as a dad, spending 7 hours at the hospital for surgery isn't as big a deal as it probably should be. Here's Alan messing around while we were waiting for Abbie to wake up again.

Here's Abbie explaining her IV and her surgery/recovery (on Morphine)
