Alan, Jesus and PMS

So in case anybody hasn't spoken to my husband, I'll just put it out there that he is rather sarcastic. That is to say, he has a warped sense of humor. He is irreverent at times (most times?). He's hilarious. Today in church, Alan blessed me with some of his "oh so lovely" thoughts on Christ, the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount. Keep in mind that he was whispering this to me during Sunday School, while we were sitting in the front row. We were discussing Matthew 5, specifically what it meant when Christ called us (the multitudes) "the salt of the earth." Here's Alan's logic: We are the salt of the earth. Salt retains water. Jesus is the "living water." (See the story of the woman at the well.) "So you should be happy when you're PMSing and bloated because it's really Jesus!"
Look Out! LIGHTNING!!!!!!!!!

In My Dreams...

The nightmares have stopped! Well, I had one night free at least! A friend dropped a book off for me yesterday after she read this blog. She reported the inability to forget the vampires as well and said that she had to read a new book to get over it. Thank you, Rachel--It seems to have worked! In other news, I was given the ultimate birthday present. Another friend is taking me to see Twilight on opening night! Yes, we are going to brave the teeny-boppers to see the 12:01 show! There are three of us (I won't name names to preserve their dignity) with tickets (Star Cinemas) already, so if anybody else wants to join the party, let me know! The more the marrier! I'm embarrassed looking back at this post. The number of exclamation points I used is absolutely humiliating!

Jumbled thoughts on a Duchess

This evening, in my never-ending pursuit to learn to be alone, I ventured out to the movies by myself. I think that I've been to 3 movies alone in my entire life; I know how pathetic that sounds. I'm working on it. It doesn't help that I have 2 little missionary companions who never leave my sight, range of hearing (except when they whine so high that only dogs listen) or personal space. I am more motivated, and actually grateful for the opportunity, to be alone. I saw the movie, The Duchess. I have the book, although I haven't yet read it due to another, um, book. I mean 4 books. Anyways, the story is about a Duchess of Devonshire, Georgiana Cavendish. It follows her life from her marriage to the 5th Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish, to the birth of her illegitimate daughter, Eliza. I won't give away the entire story, but suffice it to say that this woman is the portrait of why I wouldn't want to live in the 1700s or in royalty in general. Georgaina's husband was an adulterer who eventually married her best friend. He forbade her from being with her true love by telling her she'd never see her children again, despite his affairs and the fact that Georgaina reared one of his illegitimate daughters, as her own, when the girl's mother died. All that the Duke wanted was a son. He was finally "blessed" with a son after he raped Georgaina. He later forced her to send her illegitimate daughter away, watch her true love marry another woman and then live with him and his "new wife"/her friend for the rest of her life. She preceded them both in death. Today I was so stressed out that we actually had to leave Target. Abbie was walking on a shelf and knocking down picture frames, while Nate insisted on standing no less than one quarter inch in front of the cart at all times. Kind of puts things in perspective, doesn't it? What is my deal?! At least my husband isn't sleeping with my best friend! At least I am granted enough freedom to decide who I see and what I do. We are so spoiled in this life. We are so caught up in little things that we forget to see how easy we really have it. I do not count the good things in my life nearly as much as I count the bad things. Sometimes I get very frustrated feeling that my life is too stationary. We were "stuck" in Madison for 4 years for med-school. Now we're "stuck" here for 5 more years until Alan finishes residency/fellowship. I often feel that I am "stuck" taking care of my kids. Obviously this is not true because if I wanted to go back to work or school, I definitely could; staying home is a choice. I feel, though, that by spending my life being a mother, I'm somehow not progressing. I'm not furthering my education or climbing the career ladder. I'm just wiping snotty noses and poopy butts. I wonder why I feel like this? Rationally, I know that by staying home with my children I am teaching them life lessons, values, morals. Still, though, whether its society's impression on me or something in my own head, I feel that I should be doing more. Is this a societal view? Certainly in the movie this evening, it was clear that while mothers are important, nurse-maids or nannies should be doing the day in day out childcare. Is this still a part of our culture? I often hear moms say, when asked what they do, "I just stay home with my kids." Just is the important word. As if staying home with kids is less than something else they could be doing. Hmmm... Random thoughts with no clear direction... I guess that that is what a journal (blog) is for. I am going to try to appreciate my children more. I am going to try to appreciate my life more. I'm trying to wrap this up somehow, but I can't seem to do it. I guess I'll just end it there.

Halloween Evening

Isn't she GORGEOUS?!
This is classic Abbie
Trick-or-treating
It was over 60 degrees after dark!
Doctor and Clone Trooper
Look at their feet!

Happy Halloween!

I love Halloween. It is my favorite holiday. I love dressing up, I love trick-or-treating and I love decorating. I'm going to make it a good day for me and a good day for my kids! I'll post pictures later. My Halloween began with a FRIGHT! I remember waking up with Alan shaking me and saying, "It's okay. You're just dreaming." Yup. Another nightmare. I was yelling, "Help," over and over again in my sleep. REALLY? This is getting ridiculous. What's even more ridiculous is that I was running from Edward in my dream. He's a flipping vegetarian (and totally hot--Why would I run?)! :) Happy Halloween!

Psychotherapy

After Alan had to wake me up last night because I was yelling and screaming at the top of my lungs, I decided I might need some psychotherapy. Well, I already knew that, but some therapy directly related to PURGING THESE BLOODY (no pun intended) VAMPIRES FROM MY BRAIN! It was funny in the beginning, and still is, honestly, but my sleep is suffering. Maybe I need to sleep with garlic around my neck. Although, according to the books about which I'm having nightmares, the garlic won't work--I will have to light my brain on fire. Ack.

Nightmare(s)

So apparently I've been reading a little bit too much Twilight. I'm almost done with Breaking Dawn, for the second time. So I've read all 4 books in the saga in about a week (again). I think I need a break... Last night I woke myself (and Alan) up screaming not once, not twice, but THREE times. Dang Volturi. Edit: Add another vampire nightmare today (Tues) during nap time.

Just a Quick...

I have to write these down before I forget. Nate is on fire tonight! "Daddy, what did you say? Slap my booty?!" --Nate While looking at a stuffed buffalo head on the wall, Nate asked, "Is that a real goat?" I replied that it was not a goat, but a buffalo, and that yes, it was real. "What, they just cut his head off?" Yes, Nate. Yes. After explaining about the buffalo, Nate wanted to know why they killed it. I told him that somebody hunted it and probably used the rest for meat. "I wonder what the skin tastes like," he pondered, looking disgusted. I told him that they don't eat the skin, but they use the muscles, just like a hamburger but with buffalo instead of cow. This was HUGE to him--Meat is muscle. What about ribs? "Ribs," I told him. I wish I could have captured his face. I honestly thought that he was going to become a vegan right then and there. (Note to other parents: Avoid places and conversations having to do with taxidermy.) Nate was changing into his swimming suit. He was standing at the top of the stairs--I could only see him through the railings. He had no shirt on and had his pants sagging about half way down his butt. Picture it... "I am a rockstar!" I know there are more, but that's all I can come up with for now. BTW, we're in the Dells for the night. We'll be back tomorrow. Alan surprised me by picking Nate and I up from school after I chaperoned Nate's field trip to a very muddy dairy farm/pumpkin patch. He had booked us a hotel (with bunk beds that made the kids SUPER happy). He also surprised me by sending me to a spa here at the resort for a Swedish stone massage. And I'm going back to the spa tomorrow for some other surprise events (for my birthday)! (Happy birthday, Ra! Love you!) Sorry girls, he's taken! I don't know how, but I ended up with the Best. Husband. Ever.

Nate and Abbie

My kids are HI-larious. They continually crack me up. Here are today's examples: The kids took a bath before dinner tonight (yes, they were that dirty). Nate was wearing one-piece pajamas with a zipper up the front. All of a sudden, in the middle of dinner, I look over hearing Nate say, "This is the Bob Show!" Bobby, Bobby, Bobby." He had unzipped his PJs to display his belly button. He was calling his belly button Bob. What?! I was driving today and Abbie said, while we were rounding a corner in the minivan, "The van is farting!" I have no idea where it came from--I didn't hear anything. At dinner, Abbie stood up and left the table. She came back carrying her doll highchair with a baby doll in it. She took her booster seat off of her chair and put it on the floor between Alan's and my chairs. She then put the highchair on top of the booster seat on the floor. She announced, "This is Star Wars Baby." Alan said, "Abbie...". She said, "No! I'm Princess Leia!" She can be so random! I realized today, again, that Nate and Abbie are really good friends. I make this observation every now and then, usually depending on how much they're fighting. Even when they're fighting, though, they go right back to playing. I always wanted an older brother when I was growing up. I remember asking my mom for a brother for Christmas (Sorry, Mom!). I'm so glad that Nate is Abbie's big brother. Now that he is in school, he has started doing things for Abbie. He drew a picture yesterday morning of something that Abbie wants for Christmas, to send to Santa. They sat together while he drew and she told him what she needed him to depict. Abbie is so lucky to have him. I'm so glad that they are friends.

Why So Addictive?

Well, I made it through New Moon again. I finished Twilight for the second time a few days ago. I do realize that the Twilight saga is a bit overdone these days. There are oodles and oodles of fan websites, t-shirts, the movie opening next month, a soundtrack, etc. I like to think of myself above the "groupies," but if I'm honest, I'm one of them. I know, I know... It's the total cliche, especially among Mormons (Stephanie Meyer is LDS), but I can't help it. I'm obsessed. I saw a movie this morning and the Twilight preview showed. I think that I was more (okay, a lot more) excited by the preview than I was by the actual movie. Keep in mind that this is the same preview that I've watched over and over again (I mean, uh) at home--But it was on the big screen! And so, I pose a question: Why are these books so appealing, so addictive? I don't have the answer. I want to know what everybody else thinks. I know that I'll get some people making fun of me. I get that there are those who think that the whole Twilight deal is dorky and, well, pathetic. If that's you, let me know what bothers you about it and if you've read them, please comment! I really wonder why these books have taken off. I can pinpoint a few reasons that I appreciate the books. I think that the key to my addiction is the love story. I've always disliked sci-fi and even vampires and werewolves push it for me. That's why I fall back to the love story. Bella and Edward are not supposed to be together. Period. Heck, he wants to eat her! It's unrequited love. A tale of two star-crossed lovers, if you'll excuse the reference. I love that despite everything that falls between them, everything that lies in their path, they cannot be without each other. Bella describes a hole in her chest when Edward leaves her. She can't breathe. She is a zombie (ironic, right?). I think that true love is like that. When people are destined to be together, soul-mates, they are not whole alone. This is what I see in Edward and Bella--true love. I think that Stephanie Meyer did an amazing job at making us feel that love, feel the loss and the aching when Bella and Edward couldn't be together. I love that. I think it must just go back to what I wrote yesterday. I believe in true love. The love that Edward and Bella have together is the love that I have always had with Alan. I cannot imagine an existence without him. I feel that same hole that Bella experiences when I even think about a life without Alan in it. We've always had something more--Even as best friends, years before we started dating, we said 'I love you' to each other. There has always been that connection between us--An intensity to our relationship that I've never experienced before. Life tried to get between us; a lot of things tried to get between us. But we couldn't be without each other. It's just that simple. My world would stop dead in its tracks without him. The pain would be unbearable. I like seeing our love described in a book. Maybe it's just that simple. What do you think?

I Figured This Much Out

I know that I am a person who hides behind humor. Maybe sarcasm is a better description than humor. Either way, I'm not always completely serious--being a ham is easier than crying all the time. Today, though, I want to be serious. I had time to think. My thoughts are random, jumbled, but I need to write them down. I need to remember. My first thought: I love music. I don't think that I feel anything in my heart like I feel music there. Music can lift my day, make me smile, make me laugh, make me angry, make me cry, make me remember, make me wish, make me believe. There's a burning in my chest when I imagine music surrounding me. I miss music. I miss singing. I miss making those emotions, making myself feel and making others feel. I want to listen to music so loud that I can't hear myself think. I want to lose myself in it. I want music to be a part of every day of my life. My second thought: I am young. I sort of started my 'adult' life differently than most people I know. I chose to have a family young instead of moving along with a career. I wondered for a long time whether or not I made the right decision. I now have no doubts that I chose the correct path for my life. While I struggled with "wasting" my education, I realized that I love being a mom, despite its challenges. I love Nate dearly and wouldn't change having him when I did for anything. I didn't waste my education--I graduated summa cum laude and learned that I love learning. I'll never lose my education and I'll have something to fall back on, heaven forbid, should I ever need it. I can always go back to school if I decide that that's something that would be good for me. I can always go back to work. Anyways, I'm young. Even though I'm 27 with a kindergartener, I am still only 27. I'm not middle-aged. I am in the prime of my life. I have plenty of years to have more babies or go back to school or work or ANYTHING. I have a lot of time left and lots left to do. My third thought: I love to read. This may not seem earth-shattering to anybody else, but for me it's a huge revelation. I remember that I used to love to read, but I don't remember why or when. Lately, I've fallen in love with books. I can't even count how many books I've read in the last few months. I devour them. I long to read when I'm taking Nate to school or cooking or doing anything else, really. I crave the characters and the story and the emotions. I fall into my books head first and don't come up for air until they're done. When I finish, I miss them--I miss the people I've gotten to know and the parts of their lives that I've been allowed to share. I think about them during the day, when I'm reminded of them by a song or person or experience. I find myself in a bad mood when my characters are struggling or sad. I am filled with their feelings, overcome by their emotions. How wonderful! How amazing. I am awe-struck by a book's ability to influence me. I am so happy to have found a way to escape, a way to lose myself somewhere other than my own life. Wow. My fourth thought: I believe in love. I believe in true love, soul-mates, meant-to-be, love. I believe in unrequited love. I believe that love is the strongest emotion I can feel. I believe that love trumps all. I believe that love can be enough, love is enough. There is a level of belonging, of feeling and connection, that only love reaches. That level descends beyond the deepest level of hell and reaches higher than the the farthest star, beyond death. Love can bring two people together when nothing else seems to. Love goes where nothing else will venture--Past hate, past age, past religion, past shoulds or should nots. I believe that love can be enough, always. That's it. Nothing crazy, just some thoughts that I need to know about, for, myself. I am continually surprised by how much I don't know about myself. I wonder if it takes everybody this long to figure things out. I think, though, for me, that I will live my life as a continual path of self-discovery. I hope so anyways.

WIERD!

Can I just say how strange it is to be a parent at the school I once attended?! Van Hise had it's open house tonight and it was super strange to have Nate showing me around the school, all the while realizing over and over again that I had been a student in the same classrooms! It's all the same (even some of the teachers), except that everything is miniature. The "huge" cafeteria is only 6 tables deep and the classrooms are tiny! For anybody who went to VHE, I had a lovely conversation with Ms. Koval, the PE teacher, tonight. How wierd that she's now Nate's teacher. Ahhh--I'm getting wierded out again. Freaky.

It's not you--It's her personality.

It's not you--It's her personality
My new mantra. Those of you who know me well, and actually those of you who don't, probably know that I have suffered from mental illness more times than I would like to count (or admit). Ironic isn't it? I know what you're all thinking. To my credit, though, I married him way before he turned into a Shrink. I digress... I've been suffering from Depression for almost 2 years straight now, with few breaks in the clouds. In trying to determine why I'm so screwed up (my words), I was asked (by my psychiatrist) to think of exactly what I was doing when I most recently crashed. Long story short: I was rejected by my daughter. Apparently I have some old war wounds that haven't quite healed. When Abbie rejects me (treats me like crap, chooses somebody else over me, refuses to say goodnight or hello or I love you even though she'll say it to Alan, etc.) it's like kicking me in the same knee that was repeatedly kicked in my past. When I think about her actions, my gut (and my head) say that she doesn't like me, she doesn't love me, she does these things to make me feel horrible and guilty. When the fog clears, though, I know that she's a strong-willed, opinionated, stubborn, independent 3 year old. She's only 3. When she's older, those traits will make her an amazing woman--They're just a little bit hard to handle right now. Hence, my new mantra. Abbie and I will clash, but if I can remember that she's not doing things to be mean, I will hopefully learn to not take things personally. She's not rejecting me when she wants to ride in somebody else's car; she just wants some adventure. When she refuses to tell me goodnight or let me give her a kiss, it's not because she's trying to make me feel bad (break my heart!)--She's just a punk sometimes. The sooner I can get this in my head AND in my heart, the sooner Abbie and I can get along. I need to let her ride her own wave through life, guiding her and keeping her safe (when I can), but realizing that her wave may be, no IS, very different from mine. Hopefully then, my skin will be thicker, my wounds not so fresh, and my ability to prevent myself from crashing better. I write this on my (public) blog for 2 reasons: 1. I now have a permanant record of this--A place I can find my footing when she kicks me off the path. 2. The ONLY reason I can come up with for this horrendous suffering--That my experience might help someone else through their trials and might make it a little bit less painful for others.
It's not you--It's her personality. She's not rejecting you--It's her personality. She's only 3.

Busy, Busy (with pictures)

Life has been crazy busy lately. I spent 6 days in Rhode Island visiting Rachel, Kris and their new baby, Ben. I was so happy to be able to go out and help (I think? :)) for a while. (I will devote a whole post to that as soon as I move the pictures from CD to our computer.) Even without traveling, I feel like I can't keep track of what I'm supposed to be doing! I actually broke down and bought a daily planner! I haven't used one of those since college. With Nate's schedule (remembering which days he can't wear sandals for gym, which days he has to return his library books, which days I volunteer, what day we bring snack, which week he's Child of the Week, PTO meetings, field trips, etc.) I feel like I have a whole new life. That doesn't even include getting up and ready, packing a lunch, dropping him off and picking him back up again every day (and early on Mondays)! Aside from all of that, there's the daily life with my ever-adventurous 3 year old, a house to keep tidy (I've given up on clean), decorating and getting ready for Halloween, Alan's schedule, and finding some time for myself! So if I've been out of touch, now you know why! Here are some pictures to give you an idea of what we've been so busy doing:
Walking the mall
Eagerly awaiting the new Batman toys in their Happy Meals
The Girls
Watching Jacob rock it out at his Preschool Bike-a-thon!
Mama Mia! Starring Abbie on drums and backup and Nate on lead vocals
Picking Apples!
Abbie and Sofia hanging out under the table while Michelle and I eat lunch (Can it get any better than that?)

Go F*****!

Abbie walked, pushing Nate along in front of her, and saying: "Go Focker. Go Focker, go."
Earlier in the day, I overheard Abbie tell Nate, "Nate, I have lots of weapons." I told her that we don't play with weapons. As I walked away, she told Nate, "Nate, I have lots of things to strike stuff with." That's my girl.

My Nate Is Growing Up

Here's Nate showing me what a super smile he gave for Picture Day
Last Friday AND today, Nate has gone to school and said goodbye without crying. What an achievement! Although the pride I felt for him last Friday caused me to cry, I was able to hold it until I got to the car. He's really growing up. Today Nate had to get 4 shots (Kindergarten shots). He was so brave--He only cried during the shots, and then stopped immediately after. He got to pick out 4 pencils and a sticker. After school today, Nate yelled to a friend from his class! "Tommy! Tommy!" I was so proud of him--That's the first time that I've seen him be outgoing on his own towards another kid from school. I'm so proud of my Nate. Is it normal to feel like you're losing your baby when they're only 5 years old? I thought that that was supposed to happen with they move away from home??? Anyways, YEA FOR NATE!

Pick Your Battles

Yes, that's Abbie. Yes, those are Batman socks. Yes, she's dressed for church. Yes, that's exactly what she wore to church yesterday. Oh Abbie, pink polka dots and Batman socks... Like I said, pick your battles... (Plus, I love that Abbie wants to wear pink polka dots and Batman socks. It's so Abbie. I also want to nourish the part of her that could care less what anybody else thinks.)

Lake Geneva and Abbie Touches an Ass

Notice that, in her sleep, Abbie has stolen all of Nate's blankies and made sure that all know that that is HER bed.
Told ya so
Nate was so close

Alan turns 30!!

On September 19, Alan made the jump from a 20-something to an old man. Yup, he's 30! We celebrated down in Lake Geneva at Alan's Residency Retreat. Here are some pictures:

An Update (because I'm not answering my phone)

Dear Blog, Life has super-sucked lately. I'm still depressed and very cranky. Nate is still crying every morning before school. The last thing I hear before bed is, "I don't want to go to school tomorrow." It is also the first thing that I hear in the morning. Today Nate started the waterworks before we even left the house, while he was putting on his shoes. Somehow knowing that he's fine during the day (with the exception of crying at lunch and sometimes during recess), just doesn't do it for me. I need to see him leave with a smile. I'm just not stable enough to leave him crying every day! Today, Abbie's band aid fell off right before we dropped Nate off. I must have looked like Super-Mom walking both of my children, CRYING, down to school. Ugh. The good news is that I have an amazing husband, for whom I am very grateful. I can't imagine being this miserable with anybody else (ha ha). I have two beautiful, loud, and interesting children who are both healthy and (for the most part) happy. I have finally joined the 25 lb club and am shooting for the 50 lb club next--Weight loss is SO fun when you're motivated to absolutely nothing. I have a home, food for my family, friends (who really are taking care of me), and access to clean water and health care. If depression weren't such an all-consuming disorder, I'd probably be writing about how blessed I am. At least I can acknowledge that I have a lot for which I'm grateful. I've been reading a lot lately--I think that it's a coping strategy. If I can find myself in a different reality, which I think a good book can do, I don't have to deal with all the crap in my own life. Anyways, I recommend the "Twilight" series by Stephenie Meyer. Amazing books--I couldn't stop reading! Now that I'm done, I miss Edward. Hmmm... I've learned that while I love Nicholas Sparks, his novels can be very tragic. I think that the last 3 or 4 novels I've read (in the last 2 weeks), somebody has just up and died in the end. Speaking of waterworks... I'm glad that I've rekindled my love of books, though. I forgot that I liked reading. I also forgot that I liked baking--I baked an Apple Spice cake on Monday. Yum. As Alan said yesterday, "Don't worry--It's only the worst day of your life." He was trying to cheer me up, but I found that somewhat comforting. I'll never say it can't get worse (cause then it will, duh!), but it was a really, really, really, sad, bad, crappy, suck-it day. Thank you friends and sister-wives :) for making today better and keeping me under your eagle eyes. I would not be without you. Here's to more smiles, less yelling, less crying and better days. Opa! (or something) Sincerely, Emily

Dinner with the Dimonds

Here are Nate and Abbie, covered in stickers that they put on in the basement, while Mommy was making dinner
See--Abbie really can eat with Cinderella between her eyes
Nate and his ever-desirous green Popsicle
Abbie and her Popsicle (She was about to launch into a story)
While Alan and I were finishing dinner, Abbie decided to get ready for bath time and start the "Naked Baby Dance" early. Lovely, Abbie. Just lovely.
And that's how we roll.

Sweet Baby Boy

My little Nate-Nate. He's having some difficulty saying goodbye in the morning when we are dropping him off at Kindergarten. He cries every day. I can generally remain composed until I'm out of sight, but it's just breaking my heart. I know that he has friends and he doesn't cry all day, but it's so awful to tell your baby to go away, crying still, and have to just walk away. I just want to go back, pick him up, and say you never have to do that again! I know, however, that if I tried to home school, well, we just won't go there. If you pray, we would be very grateful for prayers that Nate will be comforted. Thank you.

Raspberries

This morning we went raspberry picking! Melissa, Jacob, Hailey, Abbie and I went out and picked two little basket fulls for each family. Jacob and Abbie did a great job filling their baskets! They even picked the ripe berries! They also had fun with the wagon--Jacob was pulling Abbie and doing a great job...until this giant hole in the ground landed them both on their butts. They laughed and got right back up to play. The picture below is their future engagement photo. I wish I had taken a picture of the actual berries we picked. They were big and dark and juicy-sweet. We picked up some cream this evening so that I can have raspberries with cream for breakfast in the morning. (Thanks for teaching me that, Dad. It's so good!)

Abbie Does Ballet (sort of)

Abbie started her ballet class today. We will be going every Tuesday at 9 AM. Her class is at Storybook Ballet, on the lower level of Hilldale Mall. She did great getting into her pink tights, pink leotard with a skirt and her ballet shoes. We even put her hair in a ponytail. She was so excited! Abbie spent about 85% of the 45 minute class standing against a wall with her fingers in her mouth. She was not going to participate. Period. The story that they were doing today was one of the Olivia stories. They put on Olivia costumes with pig ears! Abbie refused. I stuck my head in the door and motioned for her to come over to me. I asked her if she wanted a costume and she shook her head, no. I asked her if she was having fun. She nodded. So I said, "Go put on a costume and dance or we're going home." Off she went. She did great the rest of the class. My little stubborn, you can't make girl. She is somethin', alright! She said that she's going to do everything next week. :) See Abbie in the video below!

Girl's Night!

Poor Melissa was left all alone this week while Jeff was off seeing the world (I mean, uh, working). Luckily, she has Michelle and me to take care of her. Last night, after all the kids were asleep (Alan stayed home with mine), we made our way to Melissa's house. We were all in pajamas and had popcorn (in trays!)--Movie time! We decided to watch "P.S. I Love You." A great show, but very tragic. Michelle laughed at me and Melissa for crying through the whole movie. She said she hung her emotions at the door. You'll also find two new quotes over on the side...
Check out Melissa's super amazing popcorn trays!

Thank You

Thanks, Michael for fixing my blog! Michael, in his infinite wisdom of "hutmul" (html), moved the description of the blog up out of the red into the white, under the title. It would have taken me, well, forever to do that. Thanks again!

Oh Abbie

Today Abbie jumped (no, I really mean jumped) off of the kitchen counter. It was like a frog leaping, except that it was my 35 lb daughter. Actually landed on her feet, though. I'll be enrolling her in gymnastics and ninja classes tomorrow.

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessings

(^^^^^^Listen to the hymn ^^^^^^)

From the first time that I heard this song, I loved it. The melody is almost haunting. After falling in love with the music, I learned the lyrics to the song. Anybody who knows me knows that I NEVER listen to lyrics--like when I told Ra that a song would be great for her wedding, but it was actually about death. Hee hee. Well, find these lyrics and learn them, I did. Is it possible that they are actually better than the music itself? Or maybe they just go together so well that they nearly reach perfection. Here are the lyrics: 1. Come, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of thy redeeming love. 2. Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by thy help I'm come; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood. 3. O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be! Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above. I don't even know where to start. I love the part of the 2nd verse when "Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood." Those words blow me away. I feel connected to this, somehow, because Jesus sought me when I was a stranger to Him. He must love us so much to seek each and every one of us out, to rescue us from danger, by his great and horrible suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, and his death on the cross. I am humbled that Jesus did all of that for me--little, old me. I also love the last verse. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. This is me--My faith is not unwavering. It is not firm like stone. I know that I am prone to wander; it's just what I do. How sad, though, when I think of it as leaving the God I love. I know that God loves me, but that doesn't make it any easier when my best friend dies, during my trials of miscarriages, or through my lifetime struggle with depression. But what I do know, is that I can pray to be comforted. I can pray to know how to survive. I also know that Jesus suffered each and every one of our sins, pains, heartaches so that he could know what we're going through and help us make it.
Here's my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for thy courts above.
If you haven't heard this hymn, please listen. If you're not into the whole religion thing, just listen to the music--after all, the music is what drew me to it in the first place.

A Nate's Tale

Once upon a time, a young couple more truly in love than had ever existed before them, were told that they would never bare children. They had discussed it in the past and decided that only time would tell what their future would hold. Fast-forward like a month The woman, we shall call her Emily, was with child. And no, you nasty perverts, the child was half Emily and half, Alan, the man. Fast-forward until September 2008 The day was fast approaching when Emily would have to part with her dearest son, Nathan, so that he could receive the education that he so deserved. Thinking about days without Nate crumbled Emily's heart. She tried desperately to hide her true feelings from Nate, knowing that if he saw her upset, he'd be worried too. Well, the day came, Sept. 2, 2008. The family arose from their beds and acted so excited, that they might have almost believed it, for a moment that is. Alan went to work. Emily, Nate and their younger daughter, Abbie, climbed into the minivan and made their way to Van Hise Elementary School. They waited by the playground until their teachers came outside with signs for lining up. Emily helped Nate find his line and stayed close. She and Abbie walked Nate into the school, helping him find his locker and put all of his supplies inside. They, all three of them, walked into Nate's classroom and found his seat. He put on his name tag. Emily could tell that Nathan was nervous and thought it better to leave sooner rather than later. Emily bent over, gave him a kiss and a hug and said, "I love you. I'll see you this afternoon. Have fun!". Emily managed to keep her voice relatively stable, but as soon as she reached the outside, she cried. She took Abbie and walked up towards the car. As they walked the saw Nate's classroom--Emily was excited until she realized that Nate was sobbing too. The hardest thing for Emily to do that day was to walk away, just walk away. The rest of the week has been about the same--Tears in the morning, sort of happy at the end of the day. Today, Emily said, "So how was today? Did you cry anymore times than when you got dropped off?" Nate replied so so proudly, "I only cried two other times, Mommy!" For all you moms out there who think it's cake and wonderful to have your kids all gone to school, it's not. My heart has been smashed, stepped on, shot with a staple gun--FOUR times this week. My little Nate-Nate.

Calmate amigo!

The pictures and stories from Nate's first day of school (thru this week), along with Abbie's 3rd birthday pics will be arriving shortly. I still spend a lot of my days mourning (okay, crying) because my baby is in kindergarten and my little baby (I know, she's never actually been little) is turning 3 today. In between sobs, I should somehow get some pictures/details up soon. No guarantee on time.

My Baby's Going to Kindergarten

I know it's not until tomorrow, but I haven't stopped crying since, well, yesterday. My little Nate Nate, so grown up. I just can't believe that he's old enough to go to school. I know that he'll do fine--He did great at preschool and his Spanish class. I'm just not sure that I'll be able to let him go (at least not before I flood the school). I know that he'll be fine (yes, I'm trying to convince myself). But how do you let your baby go??
