My attempt at honesty in motherhood

Summer Days

I remember being little and NEVER wearing shoes. It seems that Abbie has taken after me. She is a barefoot girl! Here are some pictures from after a beautiful day outside.

My Abbie just loves to be outside!

We have been doing a lot of work outside lately. We've been planting flowers, digging up weeds and laying bricks along the side of the house. The kids have been enjoying all the outside time too!

Some of our other outdoor escapades have involved Nate learning to ride his bike without training wheels! He is doing super! Here are some pictures of him learning. He's very excited about it, but still a little nervous, so the training wheels go back on after each lesson. We're getting there, though!
I just love summer!

Amazing Trip, HORRIBLE return

Think... Tornadoes, torrential downpours, tornado warnings waiting for us on the road home. I have never in my life been so happy to be home and with my children again. I love my family and I am grateful for the power of prayer, blessings from God (and anti-anxiety medications). Pics and details tomorrow. Goodnight--May we all be safe.

On our way

We're off to Chicago--Kids are at Grandma Marilyn's and Grandpa Randy's house. Be back late tomorrow. Bye!

Crazy, crazy, crazy

My family is crazy. I'm just throwing that out there-- "I need to go poo-poo. Can I sit on your lap?" --Abbie "I don't want to go to sleep. I want some Coke." --Abbie (She NEVER gets Coke. Can you imagine this girl on caffeine?) "What's wrong with your face?" --Nate to me after I put some cream on a zit "Do you want me to pour this on you?" --Me to Abbie "No." --Abbie "Then stop whining." --Me Then there's this crazy bird outside, well, I think Alan made it crazy. I have two hanging plants on our front porch. It's been raining like crazy, so while we were trying to prevent flooding, I asked Alan to put them out in the rain to get some water. (Yeah, it's been a while since I remembered and I can't reach them.) So he pulls down the first plant and this crazy bird flies out straight onto the overhang of the porch. We see baby birds in a nest in the plant (yeah, it's been that long since I watered...), so we put it back as fast as we can. Meanwhile, this freaky bird is flying headfirst into the overhang over and over and over again. Finally it flew down into a bush. Then like 10 seconds later, it shot straight up and into the overhang again. Crikey! About 10 hits later, it settled down. I think that Alan woke it up or something (it was night) and it was just totally disoriented. I watched it out the window and eventually it went back to the nest. Still no paci today--Yeah! She's asked for it a few times, but seems okay without it (knock on wood). That's all.

Our Daily Escapades

Today we took away Abbie's pacifier. Oh boy. I talked to her about it last night and she was very okay with it. This morning, we called Rachel (my pregnant sister), and Abbie told her that she wanted to send her "paci" to Baby Benjamin for when he's born because she's a big girl now. Then we called my Dad and she told him too. We were good for go until naptime--big surprise, right? NO NAP! She woke up at bloody 5:40AM and still screamed for over an hour about how she wanted her paci during naptime. Good grief. Bedtime was better! I started early, read a full half hour of stories and sang an extra song. I was very praiseful (is that a word?--my spell-checker says it isn't) of everything she did well. She got her special bear, Curly, who she had when she was a baby and cuddled with her. She was up for a little bit, but didn't cry and went to sleep without getting out of bed!! YEAH!! On a side note, the kids have been hilarious in their conversations lately. I don't want to add them all to the quotes section, so here they are: "Unkey Mikey likes Starcraft." --Nate "Am I old enough to play Starcrap?" --Abbie "Abbie, how did you get the ice cream out of the freezer?" --Alan "Maybe using my strong hands." --Abbie Crud, now they're not coming to me. I'll write more another time. Alan was up all night puking (his first time throwing up in 13 years!) and with Babs up at the COD, I am tired. Planning our vacation for next week...Maybe sin nuestros hijos! San Fran??

Home Again, Home Again

Okay, my pictures are all backwards, but it's been a long day and I don't have the energy to fix them. Just enjoy...

Army helicopter at the Ducks dock--Water/land vehicles from WWII on the Wisconsin River

Okay, now I'm really irritated. It won't let me type where I want to. We had a super vacation, minus the food poisoning I got on day 2 (hence the dead looking picture of me). We did the water parks, laser tag, horse back riding, the Ducks and a sweet resort. I may post more details later, or not. Enjoy the pics and just ask any questions you have!

MIA!

We're on vacation! We decided to leave yesterday to take a trip to the Wisconsin Dells--We're staying in a super cush resort (AND CHEAP!) with waterparks galore and our own condo to boot. We'll be here through Thursday. I'll post pics when we get back. I have my phone, but I'm only checking it once or twice a day--My goal is to be out of contact. (Remember when vacation meant no mail, emails, phone calls, etc?) Have a great week!

A Surprisingly Spiritual Day

This morning at 9:30, I met Melissa at a gal from church's house--Mona. We are her visiting teachers. I was able to leave the kids at home with Alan; I tried to get them to come but Alan had already offered baseball as an alternative, so alone I went! Luckily Jacob and Mona's son, Bridger, played a little bit so I didn't feel too bad about showing up kidless. I was able to give this month's lesson and I chose a talk called "Daughters of God" by M. Russell Ballard. Unfortunately, I tend to have issues with talks about motherhood in church. As a woman who does not find motherhood perfect and continually joyful, I find myself resenting people that tell me I should or somehow imply that it is. This talk, however, I really enjoyed. Elder Ballard discusses the importance of taking care of yourself because if you don't do that, it's impossible to take care of your kids. He also talks to the men in the church and advises them to help their wives. He recognizes the difficulties and challenges that mothers face. I really appreciated the talk and chose to share it (here too!):

As a young father, I learned the demanding role of motherhood. I served as a counselor and then as bishop for a period of 10 years. During that time we were blessed with six of our seven children. Barbara was often worn-out by the time I got home Sunday evening. She tried to explain what it was like to sit on the back row in sacrament meeting with our young family. Then the day came that I was released. After sitting on the stand for 10 years, I was now sitting with my family on the back row.

The ward’s singing mothers’ chorus was providing the music, and I found myself sitting alone with our six children. I have never been so busy in my whole life. I had the hand puppets going on both hands, and that wasn’t working too well. The Cheerios got away from me, and that was embarrassing. The coloring books didn’t seem to entertain as well as they should.

As I struggled with the children through the meeting, I looked up at Barbara, and she was watching me and smiling. I learned for myself to more fully appreciate what all of you dear mothers do so well and so faithfully!...

We need to remember that the full commitment of motherhood and of putting children first can be difficult. Through my own four-generation experience in our family, and through discussions with mothers of young children throughout the Church, I know something of a mother’s emotions that accompany her commitment to be at home with young children. There are moments of great joy and incredible fulfillment, but there are also moments of a sense of inadequacy, monotony, and frustration. Mothers may feel they receive little or no appreciation for the choice they have made. Sometimes even husbands seem to have no idea of the demands upon their wives...

As a Church, we have enormous respect and gratitude to you mothers of young children. We want you to be happy and successful in your families and to have the validation and support you need and deserve... ...find some time for yourself to cultivate your gifts and interests. Pick one or two things that you would like to learn or do that will enrich your life, and make time for them. Water cannot be drawn from an empty well, and if you are not setting aside a little time for what replenishes you, you will have less and less to give to others, even to your children... What more can a husband do to support his wife, the mother of their children?

First, show extra appreciation and give more validation for what your wife does every day. Notice things and say thank you—often. Schedule some evenings together, just the two of you.

Second, have a regular time to talk with your wife about each child’s needs and what you can do to help.

Third, give your wife a “day away” now and then. Just take over the household and give your wife a break from her daily responsibilities. Taking over for a while will greatly enhance your appreciation of what your wife does. You may do a lot of lifting, twisting, and bending!

Fourth, come home from work and take an active role with your family. Don’t put work, friends, or sports ahead of listening to, playing with, and teaching your children...

I hope all of you dear sisters, married or single, never wonder if you have worth in the sight of the Lord and to the leaders of the Church. We love you. We respect you and appreciate your influence in preserving the family and assisting with the growth and the spiritual vitality of the Church. This afternoon, I was able to accompany the missionaries on a visit. It was my first time doing so and I really enjoyed it. I was nervous at first, but it was fine! It was neat for me to get a small glimpse into missionary work. I, of course, love missionaries and have since college when I really got to know some of them. I find their devotion and faith amazing, and their work ethic unbelievable. But today I was privy to a different side of missionary work. I am used to being on the other side of the discussion; it was neat to see things from their side. I could see how much they care for the people they teach, how much they think about them and the amount of soul they put into their work. I look forward to going out with them again! To end tonight, I need to write about how grateful I am for my life. I was discussing with Melissa and Michelle today (during our weekly playdate at Michelle's now empty old apt. while her oven self-cleaned) how difficult things were over the past year. They were wondering how we did it all, with the kids and the appointments and the hospitalizations, etc. I thought about it and came up with a few things. Number one, without a doubt, is Alan. He is my rock. He never gave up on me, no matter how bad things got, no matter how awful I treated him (unfortunately with depression, one tends to become very egocentric and I turn pretty mean). He went to school, supported me and was a devoted father. Number two is my BIL, Michael. Last summer, Michael came home from college and didn't get a job. He was around all summer and helped us more than I could have ever asked for. He watched the kids while I went to the doctor, he watched the kids when I couldn't get out of bed, he drove me to and from my ECT treatments (waiting in the waiting room the whole time). Looking back, I don't know how we would have survived without him. If you see this Michael, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. The last thing is faith. I came so close to committing suicide, multiple times. Without my faith, without some belief that there is life after this, I would have taken my life--I have no doubt about that. I am so grateful to the missionaries who taught me in Albuquerque, to my friends/roommates who shared their beliefs with me and to Alan for being so exemplary in his commitment to God. I am blessed beyond compare in my life. It's nice to have days where I am sort of forced to think about God more than usual because it puts things back in perspective for me. I am grateful for today, my friends, my family, a loving Father in Heaven and a Savior who knows and understands me better than I can even fathom.

My little Bug

Nate. Nate is my little Bug. That's what I call him. It started when he was a baby and I called him Bugaboo, but then we looked up what bugaboo meant and realized it wasn't very nice. So now I just call him my Bug. I love Nate. He is turning into such a wonderful little boy. He reaching that stage of development where he understands how his actions affect other people and how they feel. He actually knows when somebody is sad (aside from when Abbie is bawling--visual cues) and he cares. It's touching to see him take care of Abbie or give me a hug when he can see that I'm having a hard time. Today I put on a pair of swimming goggles and told Nate that they were my new glasses. I asked him if he'd still let me walk him to kindergarten and hold my hand if I wore them. He looked at me so confused. He just said, "Of course!" He said he'd tell me that they look cool. What a sweetheart. He also said he's going to like me even when he's older--I asked him to sign a paper saying that. :) I'm going to be so sad when my little Bug is gone to kindergarten in the fall. I don't know what I'll do without him. He's turned into this little friend. He's been my companion (as Melissa says--my missionary companion) for the past FIVE years. That's a long time to go spending every waking (and a lot of sleeping) moments together to just one day go to spending 8 hours apart. My heart just aches thinking of him being alone at school. Who will kiss his knee when he falls? Who will make sure that everybody is being nice to him? Who will make sure he's always safe? All day, every day, I am never out of earshot of him--he very very rarely leaves my sight. Now I just have to let him go? I realize that the past 5 years have been for me to prepare him to do all these things by himself. He can stand up for himself, make friends by himself, end arguments by himself. I'm so proud of him, but I'm also sad because I feel like he doesn't really need his mommy anymore. I know; he's not going to college. He still needs me. I just like the little boy who holds my hand in the street and gives me a hug when he comes home from a friend's house and who cries when I tell him I'm going out for a while. It's nice to feel needed. It's selfish, but it's nice. I think I'm going to be lonely. No, I know I'm going to be lonely. Hopefully Abbie will learn how to deal with a crying Mommy... And then there's Abbie. She's my little bee. (I'll explain that another time.) I am very excited to have some alone time with her--I think that she'll really start to thrive with more one-on-one time. She's so incredibly smart. I wouldn't be surprised if she's reading by the time she's 3. I just worry about being alone with her. Strange, huh? She's very demanding--I don't know if the tantrums will lessen when it's just the two of us or if these terrible twos will continue. She can be so sweet, but she also has a mind of her own and boy does she know how to use it. I love her for it, of course, but it can be so trying. I don't want to stifle her and I don't want her to change because what more could you hope for than a woman who knows what she wants, will do anything to get it and won't let anybody or anything get in her way? It's just a little bit challenging in a 2 year old. Oh my little bug and bee...

Silly Children

Alan thought Cinderella looked wierd
Abbie with her ponytail. She would not believe that this picture was of her and not Nate. She said, "He has short hair!"

Alan got a few grapes from the kitchen, then Nate got a couple, then Abbie came out with this:

Abbie thought it was hilarious to throw her underpants at me. I love her laugh.

Apparently she's pregnant (in her chest) and, well, just watch...

Alan and I were able to go see the new Indiana Jones movie tonight. I won't spoil it, but I will say that we both liked the old ones better. After more people see it, I can explain more.

Tomorrow I am singing with our church choir during sacrament meeting. Then we have a wedding to go to in Milwaukee for a friend of Alan's from med school. Hopefully it will be fun--some of our previous wedding experiences have been, um, disastrous. Here's hoping!

Hodgepodge

Daddy's graduating today!

No more med school!!

Waiting for the ceremony to start

Alan getting his hood (That's his tassel that looks like huge sideburns)

"The Chair"

Daddy's a doctor!

Dr. and Mrs. Alan Dimond

NO ABBIE--NO!!!!!!!!!!

This is such an Abbie face

So we finally graduated! It was a happy day and we are SO glad to be done. I look back at the past four years and marvel that we made it through. We went through so much and we survived. It's really nothing short of a miracle. I don't know if med school is this horrible for everybody or if we just had a rough patch of life during it, but it was just so unbelievably awful for us. The hours, the call, the lack of respect (for students and their families), the lack of routine, and the hours again--Ugh. I can't even think about it. I'll have to write about this another time. Yeah, it was that bad.

This morning, I had a follow-up meeting with my psychiatrist. I am happy, and proud, to say that I am doing well. I am off all of my meds except for one anti-depressant. After a year of depression, that is huge! I was on more meds than I can actually imagine and now I'm down to one. I am blown away when I think about the last year--5 (or 6?) hospitalizations, close to 20 electro convulsive treatments, close to 10 different medications, therapy--that's all just for the depression. It doesn't even include the 3 weeks I spent in the hospital for Pneumonia and the thoracotomy to treat it, the months of PT and pain that followed. How did I survive? My psychiatrist told me today that I seemed like a different person, somebody she'd never seen before. I've been seeing her since my post-partum depression after Abbie. Have I really not been "better" since then? She asked what has changed. I told her honesty. I am now honest with myself. I am honest with others. I owned my illness. I stopped letting fear of what others might think overwhelm me. If stigma is an issue, I want to teach and if people think poorly of me, then I don't need them in my life. I was never able to say things like that before. I refuse to let depression run (or end) my life. I refuse to allow others to influence my self-esteem and self-concept like I used to. I am changed.

Check out the quotes

We've been busy! I've received several complaints about my absence in blogging, so here you go! I don't have much to post--We've been doing things around the house and playing lots. It's SO nice to have Alan home. The kids and I are trying to keep our routine, while enjoying Daddy all day too. Today we have our playdate with Melissa and Michelle, then dinner with the missionaries at Melissa's house. Fun! I promise to post again soon with new pics, but there's not much to show for today. Sorry! Check the quote section, though, because I've added some new good ones there. I'll try to post again tonight or tomorrow--I promise!

Crazy, crazy days (and nights)

Yesterday seems like an eternity ago! We drove down to Chicago in the morning to go to... IKEA! We scored big time, after spending way too many hours there and deciding we wouldn't do a big shopping trip like that again with the kids. They were great, though, all things considered. Our biggest purchase was bunk beds for the kids. We moved them both into Abbie's room and are going to turn Nate's old room into an arts/crafts room. The kids were very excited about both rooms, and especially the beds!

Unfortunately, Abbie was a little too excited. Abbie pulled her first all-nighter last night. I'm not kidding. She took hours to fall "asleep," then got up about an hour later and was up all night. She wasn't fussy or tired; she was happy and ready to play the whole night. It was a nightmare!
This morning, Abbie was not a happy camper. Nate, on the other hand, slept all through the night and loved his new bed. We spent the morning running errands. Then my friend, Michelle, dropped off her daughter, Sofia, while she went to work for a few hours. Sofia was a dream! A little later, Melissa and her kids came over to play. The kids played outside for the afternoon while Melissa and I played with the babies. When Michelle got off work, she came over and our playdate continued! Plus, Michelle ordered pizza for us, so it was a great afternoon and dinner!

Bedtime for Abbie took a while again, but not 2 hours. I'm praying she sleeps better tonight! I should say, I'm praying she sleeps tonight. :)

Goodnight!

Bathroom Commentary

So recently, Abbie has taken to commenting on everything while we're in the bathroom. Seems innocent enough, right? Well imagine being in a public restroom, when you know that there are other people in the restroom, and hearing your darling 2 year old say (at the volume only a 2 year old can accomplish): "You have hair on your bum, Mommy." "You had a poo-poo. Why did you have a poo-poo?" "I hear your pee-pee. Your pee-pee is loud." "What's in your underpants? Why do you have that thing in your underpants?" (Pad) I know that that was TMI, but that's the point. It's so fun taking a 2 year old into the stall with you! Always an adventure! Nate has her beat, though. In a public bathroom a while ago, Nate told Alan while he was using the urinal, "You have a long, long, long, long penis." Out of the mouth of babes...

Feliz Dia de Las Madres

My Mother's Day started at ~6:45AM with the kids bringing me Lucky Charms in bed. What a treat! (I kept reminding myself that they didn't know what time it was.) I was then escorted out to the living room to find a beautiful new double jogging stroller! I'm so excited--I took it (with kids) out for a light run today and loved it. I'm hoping that this will motivate me even more to exercise everyday and lose this weight once and for all. We went to church where I got a mango (yum!) and cards from the kids made in Nursery and Primary. It was a good day and I am writing early because I have been relieved of bedtime duties tonight so that I can relax (the best gift of all).

Today has made me think more and more about being a mom. I know, is it really possible for me to ponder this anymore? Today I feel that motherhood is a blessing. I am reminded, by a friend, of those who are not able to have children in this life. I am reminded that Alan and I were told that we would never be able to have children. I am reminded of those who don't find themselves in life situations where having a baby is possible. I am reminded of the two babies I miscarried between Abbie and Nate. I am reminded of the love that I have grown to have for my children. It wasn't instantaneous. I didn't have that moment that some women talk about. For me, it took time. It took treating my Postpartum Depression (with both Nate and Abbie). It took learning about them and learning about myself. There are still days that I wonder if I love them enough--If I love them like I'm supposed to. There are days where I wonder if I loved them more, would they be better behaved? (I think we all have those days.) It is then that I am reminded of God. He loves us so immensely, so perfectly--yet we still "misbehave." If God's children aren't perfect, how can I expect myself to have perfect children. Even Mary lost Jesus for 3 days when he was a child! I have hope! My conclusion this Mother's day is that being a mother is wonderful, rewarding, fulfilling and joyful. But it is also horrible, trying, draining and hard. We just do what we can do.

Happy Mother's Day.

Out of Energy

I plan on doing a follow-up post to the Mommy Timeout post and all the responses, but it has continued to be a rough week, so tonight will not be the night. Abbie has all the energy and spirit that I dream of my little girl having, I just have not yet learned how to absorb it or how to help her control it. I'm told by friends who are a few months ahead that it just takes time. I hope we make it! Here are some pics from our past few days--It's all I have the energy to do tonight.

This is what I woke up to in the middle of the night. Alan and Michael play computer games online, late at night. Apparently they've taken to using Skype during the game and Alan found that tying the microphone around his head was very convenient. Yes, he does graduate from medical school next week.

Mommy Timeout

I know that I'm not typically a morning blogger, but today I am on a Mommy Timeout and it is warranted. A Mommy Timeout is when I've had it, when I am at the end of my rope and need some time to cool off. I can't believe it's not even 9 AM and I'm already deep into my first Mommy Timeout. What led to this timeout, you ask? One guess... Yup, Abbie. She wanted to wear this stupid outfit that was dirty and stained and for the middle of winter, not a day when we're supposed to be in the 70s. After trying to talk with her (why I try to rationalize with a 2 yr old is beyond me), I just told her that I was picking out the outfit and she was going to wear it. This was after a timeout for screaming at me. So, in the process of trying to get her dressed (yes, we're talking about restraining her and forcing the clothes on), she pinched me and then... SHE BIT ME. I was astonished. She has bitten before, but never me. Never me. She went on timeout and I called Melissa to talk to somebody who would understand. I cooled down a little, got her off timeout and talked to her about why that's not okay. She clearly felt bad, knew she had screwed up big time and said sorry. Now she's off reading books with Nate and I'm left here, on my Mommy Timeout. I've said that this blog is about honesty, so if you're not in it for the deep stuff, shut your browser down now. I feel ashamed. How could I, the SAHM, who works day in and day out to teach my children manners, good behavior, how to read, how to dress themselves (I guess I should have left that off the lesson plan), how to do everything, have a daughter who bites me? I know that I sound arrogant. I don't mean to. I just wonder what I've done wrong. What opportunity did I miss to teach her? What did I do that made her think biting is okay? Where have I gone wrong? That's how I feel. Now rationally, I know that how a child behaves is rarely all about the parent. There are wonderful parents out there who have hellions as children, through no fault of their own. It's just hard to see that when it's your own child. I feel a little better now. Writing out my thoughts helps. Off to get ready to go to the zoo. These are the days when I think that honesty in motherhood is so important. Do other children bite their parents? I just don't know because nobody talks about things unless it's how many cupcakes they made for their child's class or how many times their son pooped in the potty yesterday. Why?

A Lovely Sunday

Abbie got her toenails painted pink before we walked to church today (and she only managed to wipe one foot all over the couch)

Apparently my opera singing in the morning isn't pleasing to Abbie

LOVE

Yesterday was a full day. My friend Rachel had her baby and we went to see her at the hospital in the morning. She had a beautiful girl and they named her Aurora May. Another woman from our ward, Bethany, also had a baby--a boy named Carston. Abbie was out of her mind with babies and it was nice to see such new life.

Alan came home at lunch and was done! He only had a half-day, such a treat. It also meant that I was able to go to Nate's Preschool Mother's Day Party in the afternoon without Abbie. Not that it wouldn't have been fine to take her :) The party was so nice. They had set up tables and chairs and set places for everybody to sit at. There were flowers on the tables too. There was a formal meal (hee hee) consisting of Ritz crackers and cheese spread, ants on a log, grapes, strawberries and juice. Then the kids came in with cards that they had made and flower pots that they had each painted with a marigold growing inside. It was precious and made me feel very loved. Nate is such a great son and I could feel, really feel, that he loves me.

Today was a good day too--We didn't do much, but we took a nice walk this evening in the perfect Spring weather. I love my husband so much--He is my best friend. Even though we've had a trials as a family, I know that we are soul-mates and that we are meant to be together. I honestly shudder to imagine where I'd have been for these last 10 years (!) that we've known each other if we hadn't met going to Taco Bell for lunch that fateful day. :) I love my children. When I think about them being mine, a part of me and a part of Alan, I am reminded of what a blessing they are. And let's be honest, we all need that reminder now and then. Ah, love...

Sorry, I was just interrupted by Nate pushing Abbie off a stool and Abbie biting him in the arm. What was I saying?

Here are some pics from the Mother's Day deal:

Really?

No comments from yesterday's post?? Did I offend or is nobody reading this?
